EDMONTON, October 6, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The Government of Alberta is seeking to ensure that the federal Government in Ottawa cannot impose homosexual ‘marriage’ on the province.  The Conservatives under Ralph Klein are contemplating two initiatives to counter the pending federal legislation.  The new considerations were driven by the possibility that the use of the notwithstanding clause to stop the intrusion may not be effective.  Although nearly universally rejected by social conservatives, legal opinion from left-leaning law experts suggests that the province’s use of the notwithstanding clause to protect marriage would be disallowed by the Supreme Court.  Conservative experts retort however, that the clause was also meant to protect provinces from Supreme Court ruling that interfere in provincial jurisdiction as well.  Nonetheless, a back-up plan is being discussed which would pass a law prohibiting registration of homosexual ‘marriages’ and another law to stop homosexual activists from filing grievances based on denial of ‘marriage’ rights with the human rights commission.  See coverage in the Edmonton Journal:  https://canada.com/national/story.asp?id=752C65A2-4A17-4AD3-AD0C-904A3E08AB0A
