EDMONTON, March 25, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The Alberta government has agreed to pay 13 same-sex partners $1,000 compensation per person over the alleged injustice of having been refused spousal health benefits. Keith Purdy and his male partner, joined by 12 other “couples,” challenged the province’s rules surrounding health care premiums. Even though their employers were willing to pay the premiums for their partners, Alberta’s health ministry until now had refused to pay. “This was to get the laws changed and achieve family status for same-sex couples,” Mr. Purdy said. “The reason why we appealed the general damages section is so we didn’t set a dangerous precedent for the human rights commission on asking for these types of general damages in subsequent cases.” For more details: https://edmonton.cbc.ca/template/servlet/View?filename=ca_samesex20030325
