CALGARY, October 12, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Albertans are invited to participate in an on-line “e-referendum,” launched yesterday to oppose the legalization of same-sex “marriage” by the Canadian federal government earlier this year.
“The concerns of Albertans over the re-definition of marriage have been ignored by the Federal Government,” stated an Enshrine Marriage Canada (EMC)/ United Mothers, Fathers and Friends (UMFF) initiative. The group also criticized the failure of the Alberta government to do everything in their power to prevent same-sex “marriage” from becoming legal in their province. “The Alberta Government has not yet made good on its promise to exhaust every option to preserve traditional marriage in our province.”
“Albertans finally have the opportunity to speak up in this critical debate,” said Michele Dow of United Mothers, Fathers and Friends. “They will be able to tell each other and the rest of Canada how they feel about the marriage issue by their vote in the e-referendum.”
“The time has come for Albertans to act directly,” the group’s web site emphasized. “If Alberta’s MLAs [Members of Legislative Assembly] pass a resolution for a constitutional amendment to protect traditional marriage, a clear message will be sent to the rest of Canada, and to Parliament, that Albertans support traditional marriage and will work to protect it. Ultimately, enshrining marriage in the Constitution is the only way to protect an institution that serves the best interests of children and society.”
“Polls have consistently shown that the majority of Albertans do not support the redefinition of marriage,” said EMC’s Bill Gairdner. “This matter is not settled. The results of this e-referendum will send a clear message to the provincial and federal politicians of Alberta that Albertans, indeed all Canadians, have more to say about marriage. I’m very anxious to see the results of the e-referendum. If the results are in favour of traditional marriage, as I am confident they will be, this will give Alberta’s politicians the consent from the people of Alberta to move ahead with a resolution.”
The ‘e-referendum’ is the first step in Alberta for EMC. EMC is dedicated to amending the Constitution of Canada to enshrine the definition of marriage as the union between one man and one woman.
Albertans wishing to participate in the e-referendum are encouraged to place their vote by going to https://www.VoteMarriage.ca and clicking “yes” or “no” to the stated question.
