Sept 4 (LSN) – American Life League commented yesterday on claims that pro-life groups are neutral on “emergency contraception.” The current controversy stems from differing responses to the FDA’s recent approval of the PREVEN home abortion kit. ALL president Judie Brown said that “any group that fails to condemn the morning after pill really isn’t pro-life. Within the real pro-life movement, there can be no neutrality on any act of killing.”  Referring to the do-it-yourself abortion kit approved in the US a couple of days ago, Mrs. Brown said,  “Physicians now get to play Pontius Pilate while mothers execute their own babies.”“It is very clear that pregnancy begins at fertilization,” said Mrs. Brown, “not an arbitrary point selected by the abortion-minded and accepted by too many people who want you to believe they’re ‘pro-life.’ Any ‘treatment’ that destroys the living human being at any point after fertilization is abortion, and all true pro-lifers must oppose any method that could act in this manner.”  Two professional sources cited by Mrs. Brown in defense of her position are:  “After fertilization, the pre-implantation embryo remains extremely vulnerable. The ‘morning after’  pill, with its high estrogen content, alters the endometrium so that implantation fails to occur…..”  (Human Embryology and Developmental Biology, by Bruce M. Carlson, M.D., Ph.D., 1994, p. 110.)  “The zygote is characteristic of the last phase of fertilization and is identified by the first cleavage spindle. It is a unicellular embryo. Prenatal life is conveniently divided into two phases:  the embryonic and the fetal … the embryonic period proper, during which the vast majority of named structures of the body appear, occupies the first 8 postovulatory weeks. …”(Human Embryology and Teratology, by Ronan O’Rahilly and Fabioa Muller, 1994, pp. 19, 55.)
