WASHINGTON, April 15, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) – American Life League’s Crusade for the Defense of Our Catholic Church will lead a protest at Seton Hall School of Law this Friday, April 16.
U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor—who has made a career of voting on the pro-abortion side in various decisions—is presenting the annual “Sandra Day O’Connor Medal of Honour” to Judge Maryanne Trump Barry of the U.S. Court of Appeals. Judge Barry is the author of a recent opinion striking down New Jersey abortion regulations. “It is unconscionable for leaders of a Catholic institution to allow an event to take place on their campus honouring a judge who has demonstrated a total disrespect for the sanctity and dignity of human life,” said Joseph M. Starrs, director of the Crusade. “Archbishop John J. Myers has the means and the duty to put an end to this scandal by barring this event from the campus. We urge him to do so.” Starrs observed, “Church shepherds must remember what Pope John Paul II said: ‘It falls to [bishops] … both to grant the title “Catholic” to Church-related schools, universities, healthcare facilities and counseling services, and, in cases of a serious failure to live up to that title, to take it away.’” The protest is set to take place on April 16 from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. at the Seton Hall Law School, One Newark Center in Newark, N.J. The national pro-life organization is encouraging anyone who shares their concerns to take part in the event. ALL is asking supporters to contact the Archbishop of Newark, the President of the University and the Dean of the Law School to protest the award ceremony and to demand that it be cancelled and that the Law School’s sponsorship of this annual award be terminated immediately.
