OTTAWA, May 12 (Lifesitenews.com) – The Federal Court of Appeal has removed the charitable status of the educational branch of the pro-life movement in Canada. Alliance for Life, is now the second pro-life group to be ruled “political” and, therefore, in violation of its charitable designation (which enables it to issue tax receipts to donors). Human Life International lost a similar court battle in January at the Supreme Court. Also, The Challenge Team, a youth organization that promotes chastity, has been refused charitable status for refusing to push condoms and birth control.
Anna Desilets, acting manager of Alliance told LifeSite that the situation is grossly one sided and unfair. Planned Parenthood, the abortion pushing behemoth retains its charitable status, as does the Every Woman’s Health Centre in Vancouver, which performs abortions. Alliance was established for the purpose of education; the group educates the public on pro-life issues but the courts don’t like it’s one-sided presentation of the issues.
“They said we were advocating a position and that is not educating,” said Desilets. But, “they don’t expect the cancer society to offer balanced debate about smoking.” “If defending human life is not a charitable activity what is?”
