WASHINGTON, D.C., September 26, 2011 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Pro-life activists in four dozen new locations, including in Puerto Rico, Germany, and Argentina, will launch their first-ever 40 Days for Life campaigns this Wednesday, September 28. In total, 301 locations will take part in the largest-ever 40 Days for Life campaign to date.
Peaceful prayer outside the abortion clinic “provides a simple reminder – to clients, to staff, to the community – of what all people know in their hearts: abortion is wrong and can never be justified,” said 40 Days for Life campaign director Shawn Carney. “I am confident that the abortion culture will continue to be overcome by the power of prayer.”
The focused pro-life initiative, which launches Wednesday and continues through November 6, will include 262 locations in 48 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. This campaign will also mark the largest-ever Canadian participation, with 15 cities in seven provinces participating.

There have been eight coordinated 40 Days for Life campaigns since 2007, mobilizing more than 400,000 people in 337 cities across all 50 of the United States and locations in Canada, Australia, England, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Spain, Denmark, Georgia, Armenia and Belize. More than 13,000 church congregations have joined together in the round-the-clock peaceful vigils outside abortion clinics and in grassroots educational outreach.
Reports document at least 4,313 lives that have been directly saved from abortion thanks to the campaigns. Following local 40 Days for Life campaigns, 53 abortion workers have walked away from the abortion industry, and 16 abortion facilities have completely shut down.
In August, 40 Days for Life Dallas announced the pro-life conversion of former Planned Parenthood facility manager Ramona Trevino, which happened during the spring 40 Days campaign. Trevino’s story had clear echoes of the story of Abby Johnson, the former director of a Planned Parenthood clinic in Texas, who converted to the pro-life cause after a 40 Days for Life campaign outside her facility.
Two abortion clinics recently closed where 40 Days for Life campaigns have been conducted. Volunteers in Pensacola, Florida report an abortion clinic was closed and a sheriff’s notice placed on the locked door as the result of court proceedings involving the business. In Forest Grove, Oregon, phone calls have confirmed the permanent closure of an abortion clinic. Volunteers say business signs were removed and the building emptied.
“This, to me, is proof that prayer works,” said Carney. “We eagerly anticipate this next campaign.”
