MOSCOW, February 20, 2002 ( – The International Foundation of Mother and Child’s Health Care is launching a year-long program in Russia to educate young people on how to avoid abortion. The “New Generation Against Abortions” program will use media campaigns and sex education programs. The Moscow Times reports that the program does not seek a ban on abortion.

Russia has one of the highest abortion rates in the world with figures reported last year claiming at least 2.1 million abortions yearly, with various experts saying the actual numbers may be much higher. The huge number of abortions has led to a widely recognized demographic crisis which has led even normally pro-abortion groups to reconsider their stands.
