OTTAWA, May 20, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) – To better coordinate diocesan efforts to increase awareness on life issues, Ottawa Archbishop Marcel Gervais is inaugurating a Diocesan Week for Life, which will run from Sunday, May 25th until Saturday, May 31st.
Events for the week will include Pro-Life Sunday on May 25th, on which celebrations dedicated to life will be held in parishes throughout the Archdiocese. A pro-life banquet will be held on May 27 and on May 29 the Archbishop will celebrate an outdoor Mass. The events center around the May 31 feast of the Visitation of Mary which, according to the diocesan press release, “commemorates an encounter between two pregnant women: Mary, mother of Jesus, and her cousin Elizabeth, mother of John the Baptist, as described in Luke’s Gospel, chapter 1, verses 39 to 56.” Mary-Ellen Douglas of Campaign Life Coalition told LifeSite that she was very pleased by the announcement. “The event falls on the heels of the very successful March for Life which took place in Ottawa on May 14. This sounds great, the more the issue gets to the public the better,” she said.
