PERTH, Australia, Feb. 5, 2001 (LSN.ca) – Perth Archbishop Barry Hickey has issued a statement in advance of the upcoming Western Australian parliamentary elections calling on Christians to consider life and family issues as they vote. “I urge committed Christians and people of other religions who share the same beliefs about the dignity of the human person and the importance of family life, to be more involved in the political life of the country and to consider standing as candidates in elections so as to serve as politicians,” he said.

“We have already seen the almost complete erosion of any legal protection for unborn life in our State, and we know that the push is on to legalize euthanasia and to (grant) legitimacy to homosexual unions as if they were marriages. These anti-life and anti-family policies could go through if they are not resisted by people of strong convictions that come from their faith.”
