OSLO, July 26, 2002 (LSN.ca) – A Norwegian baby girl beat the Culture of Death last year by surviving a botched abortion. Not only that, but she owes her life to the failure of her father’s attempted sterilization. “It was hard to believe,” said the father, Anders Ovretveit, 37. “No doctors had warned us that this could happen.” Ovretveit says he was sterilized after a cancer operation and was tested twice to confirm his impotence. His wife, Tove, 33, had their first big surprise in January last year when she realised she was pregnant. They already had two sons and decided to have an abortion. Tove thought the operation had rid her of the child until she felt pains while playing volleyball, prompting her to take a new pregnancy test at four months – which was positive. She then gave birth at seven months to a healthy 2.1 kilo baby girl last year en route to the hospital. They named her “Trude,” which sounds like the Norwegian phrase for “believe it”—but did not break their silence until yesterday, apparently feeling it was their duty to warn others that sterilization and abortion don’t necessarily give parents total control over life and death.
