WASHINGTON, Feb 16, 2001 (LSN.ca) – A BBC 5Live investigation has found that in the past two years the number of couples traveling to the US from Britain to purchase human ova has doubled. The report noted that companies, particularly in California where the buying and selling of human ova is legal, advertise the women donors on the Internet with photos and medical histories. While the cost of a human ovum can be up to $5,000, associated fees raise the overall cost to $20,000. The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), in England criticized the US for its lax policy in this regard – Lyne Mackline, of Egg Donation Inc and Shelley Smith runs the Egg Donor and Surrogacy Program in Los Angeles.
