BBC marks anniversary of King James Bible by claiming King David was gay
LONDON, January 19, 2011 (LifeSiteNews.com) – BBC Radio 4 has marked the 400th anniversary of the publication of the King James Bible by claiming that King David, the Jewish king of the Old Testament who slew the giant Philistine Goliath, was in the Bible’s “only gay relationship.”
On a literary program, one of a series on the historic Bible translation, aired on Sunday, January 9th, playwright Howard Brenton claimed that David had been in love with Jonathan, the son of King Saul.
Brenton said, “To a secular reader the story of David and Jonathan’s love is obviously homosexual, the only gay relationship in the Bible.” Brenton acknowledged that the idea is “controversial.”
The King James Bible, approved by King James I of England in 1611, is renowned even among non-Christians for the beauty of its 17th century English translation; it was the first Bible to be published in the English language. The King James was prepared by a team of 47 of the best Bible scholars of the day and remains one of the most widely read versions in the English speaking world to this day.
This is not the first time secularists and homosexualists have claimed that certain characters of the Bible, including Christ Himself, were homosexuals. The profound friendship depicted between David and Jonathan is often cited by homosexual biblical revisionists, but others are frequently mentioned as well, including the love and loyalty between Naomi and her daughter-in-law Ruth.
The BBC is now routinely subject to criticisms of anti-Christian bias in its coverage of Christianity and related issues. In the lead-up to the visit of Pope Benedict XVI to Britain last September, the BBC led what amounted to a campaign of anti-papal and anti-Catholic programming that led Edinburgh’s cardinal archbishop, Keith O’Brien, to accuse the broadcaster of being contaminated by “a radically secular and socially liberal mindset.”
Earlier this month, Catholic Herald editor and Daily Telegraph columnist Damian Thompson affirmed, “Nowhere in the BBC’s output is left-liberal bias more thickly applied than on Radio 4’s Sunday programme.”
“If you didn’t think you could actually hear a lip curl, try listening to any of its ‘reports’ that involve Christian conservatives,” Thompson commented.
An internal memo leaked in 2006 admitted that the BBC is dominated by homosexuals and that some BBC executives are deeply frustrated with the corporation’s commitment to “political correctness” and liberal social policies at the expense of journalistic integrity and objectivity.
