(LifeSiteNews) — The new interim leader of the Conservative Party of British Columbia has vowed to ban so-called sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) ideology from all public schools, should he form a government.

Speaking to the media recently, B.C. Conservative interim leader Lorne Doerkson said, “SOGI has been a lightning rod for division in this province.”

“I think that SOGI has to be removed,” he added.

He noted that SOGI in public schools has led to “some frustrating confusion around that program” and hasn’t panned out as intended.

“We talk about SOGI being an anti-bullying program,” he said.

“I think that it’s become something more in some of our schools throughout this province.”

Doerkson said that schools must get back to teaching “arithmetic and reading and things that I think most parents see to be very important.”

Current B.C. Premier David Eby (NDP) called a provincial election on September 22. Eby made the call only a few months after BC Conservative Party leader Kerry-Lynne Findlay was elected.

Findlay, an anti-woke candidate, took charge of the Conservatives in May after a close leadership race. However, infighting in the party came soon after, which led Findlay to resign as party leader on September 20. Doerkson was then appointed interim leader.

The current provincial government in BC under Eby supports abortion, SOGI, and euthanasia.

The general election will be held on October 24. Recent polls show that despite an earlier dip for the Conservatives, they have now closed the gap on Eby’s NDP and are leading.
