BRUSSELS, Jan 11 (LSN)  Last week the Belgian Minister of Health proposed creating different categories of human embryos to allow for freer experimentation. The proposal is “to protect the embryo ‘in vitro’,”  but to allow “the creation of human embryos destined, specifically, for scientific research.” The same fate would be destined for those embryos left over from artificial insemination. The Health Minister is apparently only concerned about protecting those embryos originally intended for implantation.  Zenit news notes that the proposal contravenes the European Convention on Bioethics, which in article 18,  specifically prohibits embryo experimentation. According to Zenit, the Council of the Belgian State must review and approve the proposed legislation before the Chamber can debate it.
