BRUSSELS, Mar 22, 2001 (LSN.ca) – Belgian senators have agreed on draft legislation to legalize euthanasia. It will go to the Belgian upper house of parliament within the next month with the lower house voting on it shortly thereafter. Politicians are being allowed a free vote on the issue. The proposed law is similar to that of the Netherlands and states that requests for euthanasia must be made by a patient who is conscious when making an active, voluntary and persistent demand. Most observers of the situation in the Netherlands know that the legal restrictions actually do nothing in practice to restrict euthanasia to the prescribed limits.
