VANCOUVER, Jan 22 (LSN) – British Columbia Report magazine reported last week that Vancouver Public Library’s Oakridge branch refused to stop a man from viewing pornography over the Internet in the children’s section of the library. Six children were exposed to the man’s downloading of pornographic pictures of women in bondage. When informed of the situation by concerned parents, library staff refused to halt the activity citing “good library service”. When confronted, Vancouver Public Library’s finance director Eric Smith, acting for the library’s vacationing head director, said, “we prefer not to monitor what people are doing on the Internet, we don’t want to play policeman wandering around”. “Nor does the public want us to do that,” Smith added. Moreover, Vancouver Public Library’s public Internet access policy states that “All members of the public, including children, will have access to workstations with no content limitations.”
