(LifeSiteNews) – U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm is calling for a green energy “transition” amid high energy prices, claiming that it would mark “one of the most significant events in human history.”
Granholm made her remarks in a YouTube video released by the Department of Energy Thursday. “Right now, we are witnessing the beginning of one of the most significant events in human history: the clean energy transition,” Granholm stated. “It is long overdue, and it can’t progress fast enough.”
The department released the video as an international promotion for the Global Clean Energy Action Forum (GCEAF), set to take place in Pittsburgh in late September this year. According to Granholm, officials from over thirty countries will participate along with business leaders to focus on making clean energy “more secure, more affordable, and more accessible.”
The video comes as the Bureau of Labor and Statistics’ Consumer Price Index Report shows that gas prices increased by 7.5% in June, with an increase of 59.9% over the past year, the largest gas price increase since 1980. Electricity prices also increased 1.7% in June, and natural gas experienced an 8.2% increase last month.
Granholm has previously expressed a desire to “transition” away from oil and gas. In November 2021, she stated that “We’re working through an energy transition … The reality is, we have to take some time to get off of oil and gas, we recognize this. This is a transition.”
The Biden administration has frequently blamed oil companies and the Russian invasion of Ukraine for the high cost of gas and related inflation. However, the administration soon after taking office ordered a freeze on new oil and gas leasing on federal lands and also demanded further crackdowns on coal plants.

The administration faced criticism last week for blaming the war in Ukraine and gas companies for price hikes and taking credit for decreased gas prices. “This is really hypocritical on their part,” said Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer of Missouri, the top Republican on the House Small Business Committee. “They run prices up more than double because of regulations, then there is a little decrease, and they tout that. It’s insulting.”
Last month, Brian Deese, director of President Joe Biden’s National Economic Council, told CNN in an interview that high gas prices were necessary to protect the “liberal world order.” “This is about the future of the liberal world order and we have to stand firm,” Deese said after he was asked about the impact of the Ukraine war on American gas prices.
Biden has stated that Americans should be willing to pay high gas prices for “as long as it takes” to defeat Russian President Vladimir Putin.
