OTTAWA, Jan 18, 2001 (LSN.ca) – The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops(CCCB) was blasted by homosexual activist groups and the media for their courageous stand in defending the traditional definition of marriage. As reported by LifeSite yesterday, the CCCB wrote a letter to Governor-General Adrienne Clarkson to “criticize and protest the greetings and congratulations that were sent” from her office to the male and female homosexual couples who staged a “wedding” at a Toronto area church.

Canada’s leading homosexual activist group EGALE complained bitterly that the bishops’ objections were “intolerant” and a “hysterical overreaction”. But the criticism was not limited to homosexual activists. The Canadian Catholic Civil Rights League (CCRL) has asked members to complain to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) after the host of its Ontario Today program ridiculed the CCCB for its action. Dave Stephens, the CBC host, tried to make a parallel by stating his concern that the Governor General’s visit to the unfortunate glue sniffing Innu children of remote Labrador would somehow be seen as an endorsement of their glue sniffing. Dr. Thomas Langan, president of CCRL said, “Mr. Stephens statement belittling of the CCCB merits an immediate apology. His parting remark served to denigrate a very well spoken bishop’s statement. It is an outrage, unprofessional and an absolute insult!”

The CCRL invited members to voice their concerns to the CBC:  Ontario Today, PO Box 3220, Station “C”, Ottawa, Ontario K1Y 1E4 toll-free number 1-888-817-8995 talk back line:1-888-591-4111 FAX:1-613-562-8814 Mr. Stephen’s email: [email protected] Andy Clarke – Executive Producer: [email protected] Ontario Today producer Elisabeth Hay: [email protected] 613-562-8468 Fax: 613-562-8814 General email: [email protected] David Bazay- CBC Ombudsman – [email protected]
