OTTAWA, Ontario, June 20, 2013 (LifeSiteNews.com) – As tributes of praise are heaped upon newly resigned Liberal MP and former Ontario Premier Bob Rae, life and family advocates are breathing a sigh of relief that an ardent supporter of legal abortion and the anti-family cause has flown the political coop.

Rae, at one point a contender for the Liberal Leadership who served as interim Liberal leader following the party's devastation in the 2011 election, has left politics for his recently accepted role of chief negotiator for First Nations.

Rae leaves behind a political legacy forever marred by his support for allowing babies to be killed through abortion.

It was Rae’s Ontario NDP government that instituted the 1994 injunction that created a bubble zone to curtail pro-life activity outside of abortion facilities. Critics saw the move as a government crackdown against the pro-life movement after the media declared it guilty for the 1992 bombing of Henry Morgentaler’s abortion facility in Toronto. While charges were never laid in that bombing, the prime suspect was thought to be the father of a baby aborted at the facility.

It is this temporary injunction that pro-life heroines Linda Gibbons and Mary Wagner have fought to overturn at the price of their freedom. They are currently both imprisoned for attempting to peacefully counsel abortion-bound women to choose life within the bounds of the bubble zone.

When MP Maurice Vellacott nominated the two women for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal last November, Rae accused him of “breaking the law” since he might be “encouraging” others to civil disobedience.

Although Rae said at that time that it was up to the police to determine whether to pursue the matter, he stated: “The broader question is this: Does Mr. Harper condone members of his caucus encouraging people to harass women seeking medical services and break the law?”

During the floundering federal Liberal Party’s Summer Caucus held in September last year, Rae as interim leader exhorted the 35 Members of Parliament and 40 Liberal senators present to maintain “Liberal ideals,” including support for unrestricted abortion.

Referring to Tory MP Stephen Woodworth’s Motion 312 to examine the humanity of the unborn, Rae stated: “We are clear on this question: The rights of women to choose, to have control over their own bodies, is not a right which is going to be taken away by the Parliament of Canada, and it is not a right which should be subject to some private member’s bill which is going to affect the rights of women to have choice, to have genuine equality, and to have full and complete access to the medicare and the health care that they need.”

In 2010, Rae introduced a “reproductive health” motion as part of the maternal and child health initiative at the G8 summit that would include the “full range of family planning, sexual and reproductive health options, including contraception.” Pro-life leaders worried at the time that opposition parties would force the Tory government to fund the measure.

In 2007, Xtra called Rae an “articulate and thoughtful proponent of gay rights”. When Rae became NDP premier of Ontario in 1990, he told homosexual activists: “I want to assure you of our continuing support for equal treatment of same-sex couples.” That next year, according to Xtra, his party created a policy on same-sex rights that homosexuals described as “mirroring the gay activist agenda.”

Life and Family leaders and many Canadians were embarrassed in 2006 when Rae as the Liberal Leadership front-runner was filmed skinny dipping for a gag with homosexual comedian Rick Mercer.

Rae told reporters at a news conference about his resignation: “It's been a very difficult decision and as you may have heard from the caucus, a very emotional one for me.”

“It's not easy, frankly. The leader [Justin Trudeau] and I talked about this, and he expressed a strong desire for me to stay and I eventually had to tell him, sorry I can't do that.”
