VILLA MARIA DEL TRIUNFO, Peru, June 25, 2012 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A 60-year-old Peruvian man is fighting for his life after a bomb exploded at his home, an explosion his family believes came as retaliation after he turned in his neighbors for running an illegal abortion facility.

The bomb severed the legs and fractured both arms of Leonardo Valderrama, a Peruvian construction worker, as he returned to his home in the city of Villa Maria del Triunfo, Peru.

“His lower extremities flew about 100 feet,” said his wife Lita Paúcar.

“He was getting back from breakfast,” she said. “And when he was about to enter the house, he stepped on the explosive that mutilated his legs.”

The Peruvian news service El Comercio reported the attack took place at about 8:30 Monday morning.

At first, security inspectors suspected that a gas leak had caused the incident, but they later ruled out that possibility.

Valderrama’s relatives are accusing their neighbors of planting the bomb.

“We had been already threatened by them,” said Valderrama’s niece Laura Valle. “They did it in retaliation for us telling the authorities that they run a clandestine abortion clinic.”

In Peru. abortion is illegal except in cases where the mother’s life or health is at risk. However, clandestine abortion clinics can freely publicize themselves using claims such as: “Get your menstruation back instantly and without pain for only 50 soles” (about $17 U.S.).
