(LifeSiteNews) — On this week’s episode of The Bishop Strickland Show, Bishop Joseph Strickland explains the concept of sensus fidei and how Catholics can determine whether or not a teaching or practice conforms with Christ’s revelation.

According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the sensus fidei refers to the “supernatural appreciation of faith” by the “whole body of the faithful,” encompassing everyone from the bishops to the laity.

Or as Bishop Strickland puts it, sensus fidei is the “spiritual instinct that enables the believer to judge spontaneously whether a particular teaching or practice is or is not in conformity with the Gospel and with [the] apostolic faith.”

His Excellency finds the concept to be of great importance to Catholics, especially in a day and age where sound doctrinal teaching is increasingly drowned out by the “opinions” of our bishops.

How do Catholics develop this “spiritual instinct”? Bishop Strickland explains that it can only occur when we “constantly, humbly, lovingly” pursue a deeper knowledge of and relationship with Jesus Christ.
