(LifeSiteNews) — On this week’s episode of The Bishop Strickland Show, Bishop Joseph Strickland called on Catholics to use the Lenten season, which begins this week on Ash Wednesday, to make reparation for their own sins and the sins of the world.

“There’s just so much division and turmoil,” Strickland said. “I would urge everyone to really look at this moment as a time of reparation and atonement first for [your] own personal sin … but also for the sins of the world. To offer your prayers, to pray rosaries, to pray litanies, to read the Scriptures, to do everything you can in your spiritual life in this coming Lent, to fast.”

His Excellency encouraged the faithful to “really raise the bar” on fasting this Lent. Although the only mandatory fast days are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, Bishop Strickland said eating a little less throughout the season (without jeopardizing one’s health, of course) will reap spiritual benefits, particularly if it’s offered up as a reparation for sin.

Not only should we make a greater effort to turn away from sin, Strickland said Catholics ought to “joyfully embrace” the call to sanctity.

“We need to make this Lenten season deeper and more spiritual than ever, because we’re living in a very dark time where people are fearful,” he said. “But we know that Christ has conquered sin and death. He’s conquered Satan. He’s conquered all the power of evil. But we’ve got to embrace the power of good. We’ve got to make our own personal choice.”
