DES MOINES, April 22, 2016 (LifeSiteNews) – Democrats in the Iowa state Senate have defeated an attempt to defund Planned Parenthood.

The Democratic majority narrowly passed a motion to strip a resolution that would have barred state Medicaid dollars from going to abortion providers in a 27-23 vote on Friday.

The Republican-controlled state House of Representatives passed the bill on Wednesday, 56-42.

The resolution, which was supported by Gov. Terry Branstad, said, “Distribution of family planning services program funds shall not be made to any entity that performs abortions or that maintains or operates a facility where abortions are performed.”
