July 16, 2019 (LifeSiteNews) – Planned Parenthood removed Dr. Leana Wen as president Tuesday citing the need for a more aggressive leader, less than a year after appointing her, in a move that came as something of a surprise to Wen herself.

The New York Times reports that the abortion giant’s board made the decision after “hours of negotiations,” based on unrest within the organization and a perceived need for a “more aggressive political leader” to resist pro-life legislative efforts across the country.

Planned Parenthood has not settled on a long-term successor, but the board unanimously chose longtime member Alexis McGill Johnson as interim president of both the organization’s abortion business and its political arm, the Planned Parenthood Action Fund.

“I am proud to step in to serve as acting president and facilitate a smooth leadership transition in this critical moment for Planned Parenthood and the patients and communities we serve,’’ said McGill Johnson. “I thank Dr. Wen for her service and her commitment to patients.”

Wen said on Twitter that while her departure had been in the works for an unspecified amount of time, today’s vote happened during a “secret meeting,” about which she only learned after the fact. She also issued a statement citing “philosophical differences” between herself and the current board chairs:

Planned Parenthood announced last September it had selected Wen to replace the retiring president Cecile Richards, citing the former Baltimore Health Commissioner’s medical background as an asset for framing abortion as health care. During her tenure, pro-lifers and others criticized Wen for various false statements, while taking pleasure in her January admission that abortion was Planned Parenthood’s “core mission,” rather than a side practice dwarfed by legitimate health services.

This is a developing story. LifeSiteNews will continue to update it with further details and commentary as it unfolds.
