WASHINGTON, D.C., February 3, 2016 (LifeSiteNews) – Rick Santorum will drop out of the presidential race this evening, multiple news sources have confirmed.

Republican sources have verified Santorum's departure from the race to both CNN and Fox News.

CNN's John King broke the news this morning on his Twitter feed:

Sources gave the same details to Fox News, where Santorum is scheduled to appear at 7 p.m. EST on “On the Record with Greta Van Susteren.”

Santorum is the third candidate to exit the race since the Iowa caucus, which he won just four years ago. On Monday, he received only one percent of the vote, finishing eleventh in a crowd of 12, just above former Virginia Governor Jim Gilmore.

Earlier today, Senator Rand Paul suspended his presidential campaign, and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee ended his second quest for the Republican presidential nomination on Tuesday.

Santorum won 11 states in his 2012 bid against Mitt Romney, when he became the uncontested alternative for social conservatives to Mitt Romney's centrism.

He announced his second presidential bid last May, running on a platform of “blue collar conservatism” that included reviving America's manufacturing jobs, providing tax relief to large families, and restricting immigration – both legal and illegal.

But the former Pennsylvania senator, who last ran for the Senate in 2006, was crowded out by numerous candidates with equally stellar conservative and pro-life views.

He watched his newest distinctive issue, buoying American labor by restricting immigration, taken by Donald Trump, who rode the issue into front runner status.

Santorum, who is said to be preparing to endorse another Republican presidential candidate, appeared at Trump's fundraiser for veterans in Des Moines last week alongside Huckabee.
