SURREY, May 9, 2001 (LSN.ca) – Elections BC has ordered Our Lady of Good Counsel church to cover up a church sign during the advance poll and on Election Day. The location has been designated a polling place for the May 16 BC election. The sign in question depicts an unborn child with Mother Theresa caption “God’s gift to the Family.” It also offers contact numbers for various crisis pregnancy help lines.

John Hof, President of Campaign Life Coalition BC, is shocked that Elections BC would impose this arbitrary restriction on a church. “Their mandate should only extend to political messages and this seems well beyond their purview. It is almost reminiscent of government thought police,” Hof commented. What Hof fears most is where such an unchallenged precedent might lead. “What will they ask us to cover up next? Our Crucifixes?” he asked.
