DORCHESTER, UK, December 4, 2013 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A lot of mothers say their baby changed their lives unexpectedly, but few have as dramatic a story as Nicola Weller.

In September 2009, British doctors discovered Weller had a cancerous tumor in her womb and scheduled a follow-up appointment 12 weeks later at Dorset County Hospital. But just before her surgery in January 2010, a new scan revealed the tumor had vanished.

But there was another surprise. Despite her use of the IUD, Weller was now seven weeks pregnant.

Doctors said hormones produced during her unexpected pregnancy destroyed the tumor by causing it to “disintegrate.”

“I’d had the contraceptive coil fitted,” Weller told the Daily Mail“Getting pregnant was a miracle in itself – but to find that my unborn baby had caused this tumor to disappear was a further miracle.”

Weller gave birth to a baby boy, Brandon, in September 2010, almost exactly a year after her cancer scare. Mother and baby are still healthy to this day.

“My baby ended up saving my life,” Weller said. “Without him, I may not have been here today.”

She and husband Russell also have a daughter, Alisha, who was four-years-old at the time and, according to Weller, old enough to understand the role her little brother played in saving her mom's life. She now “dotes” on Brandon frequently, and with good reason.

“He really is a Superman,” Weller said. “It was like he had been sent from above to save my life.”

Getting pregnant while using an intrauterine device may not be as miraculous as Weller's medical cure. Although IUD use has been heavily promoted by the U.S. government and medical associations since Barack Obama named John Holdren Science Czar, pregnancies are not unusual among women using an IUD; live births are.

“In as many as 95 percent of the cases [the IUD] does not prevent fertilization,” according to the Life Issues Institute. In those cases, the IUD instead acts as an abortifacient, preventing implantation of the newly conceived child.

An increasing number of women are reporting that, like Weller, they have become pregnant using the “foolproof” long-acting contraceptive.

Last December, a writer at RH Reality Check became pregnant while using the Paragard IUD, a form of contraception she says she had been told was “as effective as tying your tubes.” She opted for an abortion.

This July, Caitlin Beckner of xoJane shared her story of becoming pregnant while on the Mirena IUD. She chose to keep her child only because she was beyond the legal limit to obtain an abortion in her state. But she now says her once-unwanted child gives her so much love “sometimes I feel like my heart can’t hold it all in.”
