LONDON, March 6, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Upon returning to England following a meeting with US President Barack Obama, British PM Gordon Brown has declared as “unacceptable” the passing of Proposition 8 in California, the constitutional amendment which defines marriage as being between one man and one woman.

At a Downing Street reception yesterday, hosted by Brown for the homosexual community in honor of homosexual history month, which takes place each February in Britain, the PM said, “What I saw in America tells me what we have got to do.

“This Proposition 8 in California, this attempt to undo good that has been done, this attempt to create divorces for 18,000 people who were perfectly legally brought together in partnerships.

“This is unacceptable and this shows why we have always got to be vigilant, always got to fight homophobic behaviour and any form of discrimination.

“I want to say to you all,” Brown concluded, “you have broken new ground, you have shown what can be done, you have shown how you can change opinion in our country, you have shown how the legislative process, by your pressure, can respond.”

Brown praised those present for “breaking through barriers of discrimination and prejudice and homophobia” and recounted his government’s efforts in promoting the homosexualist agenda: “We have legislated on inheritance tax, we have legislated on homophobia in schools, we will keep taking legislative measures to protect you. You cannot legislate love. We want to support you to have the freedom that you need to enjoy yourselves.”

Richard Angell, national secretary of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered) Labour, praised Gordon Brown’s comments about Prop 8, according to PinkNews, a UK homosexualist news service.

“I am so proud that our Labour Prime Minister is the first world leader to come out passionately against Prop 8. Tonight’s event embodied the wholesale change that has taken place over the last 12 years,” Angell said.

Although the UK allows same-sex civil partnerships, the government has stopped short of calling them “marriage.”

Colin Hart, Director of The Christian Institute, a nondenominational group committed to promoting Christian principles, responded to the Prime Minister’s remarks, saying, “Mr. Brown’s comments call into question the Government’s commitment to marriage as between one man and one woman.”
