Opposition MP condemns secrecy and anti-family track record CALGARY, Nov 11 (LSN) On Monday Official Opposition Children and Families critic Eric Lowther called for a review of Canada’s report on compliance to the International Convention on the Rights of the Child (ICRC) before it is sent off to the United Nations. Lowther notes that his inquiries into the upcoming report were rejected. The United Nations requires countries such as Canada, which have ratified the agreement to submit compliance reports every 5 years. Pro-family forces are concerned that the UN agreement undermines parental rights including the right to use spanking as a form of discipline. Upon further investigation Lowther found out that “Canada’s report is currently being written by bureaucrats from a number of different departments, with the final report to be prepared by the Heritage Department.”“My office has also discovered that $365,000 taxpayer dollars have been given to a children’s advocacy group to prepare a supplemental ‘non-governmental organization (NGO)’ report,” said Lowther. “However, most parents and parliamentarians have heard nothing about what these reports will say, in spite of the concerns many parents have about the Convention.” The secrecy surrounding the report has led many to wonder about the contents of the report. “Canadian parents and their elected representatives should be able to see what the government is saying to an international body regarding the care of our children, and the rights of parents to raise their children responsibly,” Lowther said.
