WASHINGTON, February 8, 2002 (LSN.ca) – This week President Bush submitted his budget request for next year’s Foreign Aid bill (FY2003). While the budget tops $16 billion, UNFPA funding for FY 2003 is yet to be determined. Last month—in light of evidence presented to Congress showing UNFPA’s support of coercive abortion and coercive sterilization programs in China – the President withheld $34 million for UNFPA for 2002.

Reacting to the news, Steve Mosher, president of Population Research Institute – the leading group in exposing the UNFPA’s support of coercive abortion – told LifeSite, “President Bush is a man of principle and character. He has done the right thing by withholding U.S. funding for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) this year, and by placing next year’s funding for UNFPA into jeopardy.”

Despite this development, Mosher strongly urged the President to “act decisively and permanently zero-fund UNFPA.” Most Americans oppose funding for UNFPA, Mosher said, which is why so many people (Americans and Canadians) are calling the White House at 202-456-1414 to say simply “zero for UNFPA.”
