WASHINGTON, Feb 20,2001 (LSN.ca) – US President George W. Bush has selected John D. Negroponte to serve as the US Ambassador to the United Nations. Social conservatives had hoped that the sensitive post would have been awarded to a known pro-lifer, however Mr. Negroponte’s record on life issues is unknown and some past associations are seen as cause for concern. News reports indicate Negroponte is a consummate politician having served as a diplomat for some 37 years. He was Ambassador to Honduras, Mexico and the Philippines, and worked in the National Security Council under Dr. Henry Kissinger and again under General Colin Powell. According to the Republican National Coalition for Life he is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
