WASHINGTON, April 27, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) – US President George W Bush signed legislation Wednesday ensuring that companies that produce DVD filtering technology – devices that can delete or skip offensive material in DVD movies, like swearing and sex – will be able to continue manufacturing the technology without penalty.

ClearPlay Inc. is one company offering such a device – for a monthly fee of $4.95 USD, they release filters for new release movies that can be used in their DVD players. In September 2002, eight Hollywood movie studios and the Directors Guild of America filed a lawsuit against ClearPlay. The studios sued to stop ClearPlay from offering the device, which they claim infringes on copyright law because it changes the content of their movies.

“This is tremendous news for ClearPlay and a real victory for families,” said ClearPlay CEO Bill Aho. “This ensures that parents will have the tools to control the movie content their families and children see in their own home. And, it means ClearPlay has a clear path to more significant business development opportunities.”

The Family Movie Act was introduced by Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX) and sponsored in the Senate by Orrin Hatch (R-UT). The bill clarifies the Copyright Act to guarantee the legality of technologies that filter unwanted content in movies in the home.
