WASHINGTON, November 15, 2002 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A U.S. law to reaffirm the reference to “one nation under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Motto “In God we trust” was signed by President George W. Bush Wednesday. The law was rushed through the House and Senate after the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in California ruled in June that the references to God violated the constitutional separation of church and state. The legislation states that the court used “erroneous rationale” to come to its “absurd result.” Four House Democrats—Gary Ackerman and Nydia Velazquez of New York, Earl Blumenauer of Oregon and Mel Watt of North Carolina – refused to vote for the legislation which passed unanimously in the Senate.
