WASHINGTON, Dec 18, 2000 (LSN.ca) – US President-Elect George Bush has made selections for his administration which have been a great disappointment to pro-lifers who worked to elect him. On Saturday, Bush appointed retired Gen. Colin Powell as his Secretary of State and, on Sunday, he appointed Condoleezza Rice his national security adviser. He also named Alberto R. Gonzales to White House counsel. All are “pro-choice”.

Douglas R. Scott, president of Life Decisions International (LDI), expressed disappointment over the choice of Powell. “This appointment is disappointing for two reasons,” Scott said. “First, General Powell is pro-abortion. Second, the position of Secretary of State is critical in dealing with abortion policy overseas and with international organizations such as the United Nations, the World Health Organization, and so on.” The position in the administration is key in dealing with population control issues.

In an interview with the Washington Times, Rice described herself as “pro-choice” and sharing the same intellectual father as current Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright. Rice’s favorite professor was Albright’s father. “I know and like Madeleine very much,” Rice said.

Gonzales who is set to be White House counsel for President-elect Bush was appointed to the Texas Supreme Court in 1999. Fox news reports that the court was asked to rule on a case where an unmarried, minor girl could have an abortion without notifying her parents and he voted with the majority to allow the abortion with parental notification.
