CALGARY, AB, Aug 14, 2001 (LSN.ca) – The Alberta Pro-Life Association has made a freedom of information request into the numbers of late-term genetic abortions performed in Calgary. (Genetic abortions are performed after 20 weeks gestation where birth defects are believed to exist – the procedure sometimes results in live births, after which the babies are “allowed to die” without medical attention.) The Calgary Herald reports today that the Calgary Health Region (CHR) is refusing to provide the information.

According to the Herald, the CHR first demanded an $8,500 fee to research the data, and then switched tactics explaining that providing the statistics would violate patient privacy and endanger the safety of doctors.
