SACRAMENTO, September 22, 2002 (LSN.ca) – Openly defying the policy of President Bush, California governor Gray Davis, a Democrat, signed a state law on Sunday that expressly permits stem cell experimentation on human embryos and foetal tissue. The bill requires fertility clinics that do in-vitro fertilization procedures to inform women that they have the option to donate discarded embryos to research. It requires written consent for donating embryos for research and bans the sale of embryos.  Supporters of the bill, sponsored by state Senator Deborah Ortiz, also a Democrat, say it will turn California into a mecca for scientists who, according to those who place their faith in unknown scientific discoveries, will be able to exploit human “material” to cure diseases.  Davis signed a separate bill which places a “permanent” ban on human cloning for reproductive purposes, replacing an earlier temporary ban that would have expired at the end of the year.  For previous LifeSite coverage see:  CALIFORNIA ASSEMBLY PASSES ‘BAN’ ON POSSIBLE FUTURE LAWS AGAINST ABORTION https://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/2002/aug/02082002.html
