CALGARY, September 25, 2001 (LSN.ca) – The Canada Family Action Coalition (CFAC) has launched a nation-wide campaign to pressure the federal government to raise the age of consent for sex from 14 to 18.

“Adults can legally prey on and have sex with children in Canada,” says Brian Rushfeldt, CFAC Executive Director. “Since the age of consent was reduced to 14 in 1987, there have been increased incidents of vulnerable young boys and girls being exploited by adult sexual predators.”

Internationally, Canada has established a reputation as a sex tourism “hot spot” and an attractive destination for pedophiles. In 1987, the Mulroney government reduced the age of consent for sex in the Criminal Code to age 14, and the Liberal government has since refused to amend this law. In 1999, the provincial Attorneys General called for the age of consent to be raised to 16 to help combat the sexual exploitation of children. Last fall, the federal Justice Department agreed to raise the age of consent for sex to 16. But no action has been taken.

CFAC plans to distribute up to one million Age of Consent brochures, which include a tear-off portion that Canadians can sign asking the government to take action. The first 200,000 have been printed and distribution has begun.
