Canada Federal Government Urges Provinces To Begin Marrying Homosexuals

OTTAWA, July 18, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) – In a press conference yesterday, federal Justice Minister Martin Cauchon urged Canadian provinces to marry same-sex couples despite the fact that the legislation has merely been introduced, and not yet voted on by Parliament.  “I invite provinces and territories to proceed and act according to the draft bill we have tabled,” Cauchon said.  Cauchon also said that a change in the Liberal leadership would not affect the Party’s stand in favour of homosexual ‘marriage’. “If it’s true today, it will be true tomorrow for another (Liberal) government,” he said.  The Justice Critic for the Official Opposition blasted Cauchon’s attack on democracy and the family.  Canadian Alliance Justice Critic Vic Toews said, “The Liberals have demonstrated nothing but contempt for Canadians and for Parliament.”  Toews also noted that Prime Minister Chretien and his likely replacement Paul Martin “broke their promise from 1999 to ‘take all necessary steps to preserve the traditional definition of marriage in Canada.’”“They have undermined democracy in this country by allowing the courts to take full control of social policy in Canada.
