OTTAWA, May 23, 2002 ( – The National Post’s editorials editor, Jonathan Kay, whose writings suggest that he is a secular liberal, criticized the federal government’s assisted human reproduction legislation yesterday. “It doesn’t matter where you stand,” Kay said, “Ms. McLellan’s proposed legislation is morally incoherent either way.”

Kay accords “a 150-cell embryo” the same status as a fingernail, unworthy of protection as human life. However, he also points out that “Canadians have never definitively confronted the messy question of whether abortion is a species of homicide” and that “Canada has no law regulating abortion.” (National Post May 22, 2002)
