OTTAWA, Dec 18, 2000 (LSN.ca) – The federal statistics agency, Statistics Canada today released the 1998 statistics on “therapeutic” abortions in Canada noting a slight decline of 1.2% from 1997. There were 110,331 abortions in 1998, compared to 111,709 in 1997. While in most of the country the number of abortions declined, Quebec and the Yukon showed significant increases.
The report notes that “abortions were most common among women in their twenties, who accounted for half of all women who obtained abortions in 1998. On average, 27 women out of every 1,000 in their twenties obtained an abortion.”
