OTTAWA, January 19, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The Canadian military has told its chaplains to go ahead and “marry” same-sex couples if requested.

“It’s essentially a statement of the way the law is going,” said military chaplain Col. Stan Johnstone, who helped draft the new guidelines. “We don’t put any expectations on people. We expect them to function as we always do, according to the tenets of their church, their own conscience and the laws of the province,” he said, according to a Sun Media report.

Johnstone said the new “interim” guidelines are for use only until the federal Liberals bring in new same-sex “marriage” legislation expected next month. He said that none of the 150 chaplains would be forced to solemnize same-sex “weddings” if it conflicts with their religious views. Johnstone said that they also currently have never had a request by any same-sex couple to be “married,” he simply wants the military to take the “leading edge” on the issue. There is no information on Col. Johnstone’s reasons for deciding it was necessary to take the “leading edge”, especially given that no one has requested a same-sex ‘marriage’.
