OTTAWA, July 30, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops has decided to argue at the Supreme Court against same-sex ‘marriage’.  When the Court considers the government’s draft law altering the definition of marriage to include homosexual couples, the CCCB has asked permission to argue in defence of traditional marriage.  Monsignor Peter Schonenbach, general secretary of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, told the Toronto Star: “Our position is: Keep the traditional definition of marriage. It has served society well and it will serve society in the future.  I know the minister has said, `Why do you worry about it? Religions will be able to do what they want.’ We feel that religions also have to talk about the common good of society and it’s in that sense that we’re speaking.  We’re one of the members of society and we feel as a rather important member of society we should also speak. We don’t see this strictly as a religious point of view.”  The government itself asked the court to appoint a “friend of the court” to argue the case for traditional marriage.  The Ontario Conference of Bishops joined an interfaith coalition seeking to appeal the Ontario Appeals Court decision ordering a redefinition of marriage. The Supreme Court has not yet decided whether to grant the appeal.  See the Toronto Star coverage:  https://www.thestar.ca/NASApp/cs/ContentServer?pagename=thestar/Layout/Article_Type1&c=Article&cid=1059516610826&call_page=TS_Canada&call_pageid=968332188774&call_pagepath=News/Canada&pubid=968163964505&StarSource=email   See related LifeSite coverage:  Canada Homosexual Marriage Decision Appealed by Faith and Family Groups https://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/2003/jul/03070701.html Canadian Government to Seek Supreme Court Opinion on Homosexual ‘Marriage’ Law https://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/2003/jul/03070702.html
