VERNON, April 4, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A British Columbia doctor has pleaded guilty to attempting to assist a suicide and has agreed to stop practising medicine. Dr. Ramesh Kumar Sharma pleaded guilty in a Vernon court March 28th to charges that he had tried to assist 92-year-old Ruth Wolfe to attempt suicide.

The College of Physicians and Surgeons of B.C. had allowed Sharma to practice medicine under restrictions until the guilty plea. Sharma will be sentenced June 11 and the College announced it will make a final decision on his status in May.

Ruth Wolfe survived the attempt at suicide after staff at her residence intervened. CanWest news service reports that although she made no comment on Dr. Sharma’s guilty plea, Wolfe had said at the time of her attempted suicide that she was of sound mind and thought that Dr. Sharma should not be charged for having tried to assist.
