TORONTO, October 19, 2015 (LifeSiteNews) – Canadians concerned about sanctity of life issues can go to Campaign Life Coalition’s voter guide here, to check on their candidate’s views on abortion, legalized doctor-assisted suicide and other pro-family issues before heading to the polls today.
During this historically long 78-day campaign, Canada’s national pro-life, pro-family lobby group Campaign Life Coalition has canvassed candidates on pro-life and pro-family issues, and endorsed as supportable candidates from the Conservative, Christian Heritage, and Green parties, as well as independent candidates.
CLC has urged voters to put aside partisan preferences and vote for the candidate who is most likely to support legislation that protects the sanctity of human life from conception to natural death.
Pro-life voters face fewer choices this election, because Liberal leader Justin Trudeau declared in May 2014 that people with pro-life convictions could not run as Liberal Party candidates. Trudeau also said he would not permit his MPs to vote their conscience on sanctity of life issues – thus disqualifying Liberal candidates.
The NDP has long sanctioned abortion as part of its party policy.
This leaves the Conservative Party of Canada as the only major federal party that allows MPs to vote according to their consciences in sanctity of life issues.
One of the urgent issues facing whatever government is formed October 19 is how to respond to the Supreme Court of Canada’s February 6 ruling that struck down as unconstitutional the prohibition against physician-assisted suicide as unconstitutional.
The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops has already urged the new government to invoke the notwithstanding clause, to allow more time to craft a law that will protect vulnerable people against abuse of the law, and to safeguard the conscience rights of health care professionals.
