OTTAWA, January 18, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The Calgary Sun reports today that Canada is becoming a favoured destination for homosexual activists seeking to force home countries to recognize their liaisons under Canada’s same-sex “marriage” law.
A new report from Statistics Canada says that 3.5 per cent of the 22,000 marriage registrations in British Columbia in 2003 were to same-sex partners, 56 per cent of whom were non-residents of Canada.
The Stats Can report also noted that Canada is the only country in the world that permits non-residents to register their partnerings officially as marriage.
Kaj Hasselriis, executive director of the homosexual lobby group EGALE Canada admitted that the practice is being used for political purposes when couples go back to their country and use their Canadian status as a married couple to try to force laws to change at home.
Brian Rushfeldt, executive director of the Canadian Family Action Coalition, denounced the activist technique as “unconscionable.”
“Why, why is Canada issuing marriage licences to people from another country? We wouldn’t issue a business licence to a company that had no intention of staying in the country,” Rushfeldt said.
Hassel Riis mentioned Ireland as one country in which the tactic has been used. Courts in that country, however, have fought back ruling that a Canadian “marriage” between two women could not be recognized.
In December 2006, Justice Elizabeth Dunne rejected the claim of two lesbian activists who attempted to force the issue with a Canadian marriage license, saying, “Having regard to the clear understanding of the meaning of marriage as set out in the numerous authorities opened to the Court from this jurisdiction and elsewhere, I do not see how marriage can be redefined by the Court to encompass same sex marriage.”
“The Plaintiffs referred frequently in the course of this case to the ‘changing consensus’ but I have to say the [sic] there is little evidence of that,” she wrote.
The majority of foreign homosexual couples coming to Canada to get ‘married’ are from the United States.
