OTTAWA, Nov 26 (LSN) – Yesterday, Justice Minister Anne McLellan announced that should the case of convicted “mercy-killer” Robert Latimer be heard by the Supreme Court of Canada the federal government would likely intervene. However, the minister would not divulge on what side of the issue the government would be and the press was informed that that information would not be made public until the court decides on hearing the case.  Pro-life observers are deeply concerned and suspect the government will intervene on Latimer’s behalf, since the ruling Liberal party is officially pro-assisted suicide.  At its policy convention in the fall of 1996, the Liberals voted in favour of legalizing doctor-assisted suicide. Then Justice Minister Allan Rock indicated that he was open to such a change.  The final decision to intervene in the Latimer case will be made within the next month McLellan said.
