OTTAWA, September 17, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Health Minister Anne McLellan, a close ally of Prime-Minister-in-waiting Paul Martin, has let slip that the homosexual marriage legislation will likely be altered.  McLellan suggested that since Martin is to take over as Prime Minister the bill would be altered.  Pro-family political analysts have warned from the beginning of the debate that the government would likely propose the totally unacceptable ‘compromise’ of legal recognition of homosexual civil unions.

“Unless this draft bill is presented to the House (of Commons) and voted on before the change in leadership, I don’t think anyone should assume that this draft legislation is the legislation that will ultimately be presented to Parliament,” McLellan told reporters.  “Why wouldn’t he (Martin) take another look at this with whoever is in his cabinet and talk to Canadians about how he wants to move forward?”

Campaign Life Coalition which has previously warned about unacceptable compromise proposals on the marriage issue was not surprised by the news.  “I’ve seen this happen so many times before,” commented Steve Jalsevac of Campaign Life Coalition.  “The government proposes more than it expects to achieve for now, so that in the end opponents feel they have achieved a victory stopping the worst when in fact they have lost the battle and fallen into the trap of an unacceptable compromise solution.”

MP Tom Wappel previously told LifeSite that acceptance of same-sex unions would not work and would eventually lead to ‘marriage’ recognition anyway. The Vatican and others have warned that legal recognition of same-sex unions will gravely affect marriage and family life as easy divorce, common law unions and other liberalizations of marriage-related laws have already done to a devastating degree.
