OTTAWA, Oct 8 (LSN) – A press release from the office of MP Garry Breitkreuz (Yorkton-Melville)  yesterday said that the pro-family politician has introduced legislation in the House of Commons to affirm and strengthen parental rights. Motion M-478 asks the Canadian government to assure Canadian parents that the “United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child will not be used to undermine the rights and responsibilities of parents.” The convention, which Canada has signed,  is regularly interpreted by UN bureaucrats as outlawing spanking as a form of discipline. The treaty also seriously compromises the rights of parents to bring up their children according to their values and beliefs.  The motion follows a written statement by the government assuring Canadians that it will not interpret the UNCRC in such a way as to undermine the rights of parents. The motion seeks Parliamentary affirmation of this commitment in a number of different areas. In particularly,  it asks for assurances that no plan is underway to remove section 43 of the Criminal Code which protects parents from charges of assault when they use spanking as a form of discipline.  This is a new development in a long battle waged by Mr. Breitkreuz since he first became an MP.  Despite the hundreds of petitions and thousands of signatures of support that he has presented to the House, his pro-family legislation has yet to be endorsed by the Liberal majority. In May,  Mr. Breitkreuz’ previous motion (M-33) which proposed to add parental rights, responsibilities and liberty to the Charter of Rights and Freedoms was opposed by the government and dropped from the order of business for the House of Commons.  For a copy of M-478, please call:  Yorkton: (306) 782-3309 Ottawa: (613) 992-4394 E-Mail: [email protected]
