OTTAWA, Ontario (LifeSiteNews) — Pro-life Member of Parliament (MP) Rachael Thomas has called out the Liberal government for funding radical leftist organizations which celebrated the assassination of Charlie Kirk.
During a September 24 Canadian Heritage committee meeting, Thomas challenged Liberal Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture Steven Guilbeault for spending taxpayer dollars to support Montreal-based magazine Cult MTL and the Canadian Anti-Hate Network, both of which express animosity towards Catholics and pro-lifers.
“An organization called Cult MTL,” Thomas began, is “a self-proclaimed politically left tabloid that exists online and the Heritage department deems it as ‘journalism.’ They’ve given them a grant to that effect.”
Thomas revealed that following the brutal murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, the outlet published an article titled, “To Hell with Charlie Kirk.”
“Charlie Kirk died as he lived: propagating hateful myths about marginalized groups in our society,” the outlet wrote, just one day after his death. “He was a profiteer and architect of America’s increasingly violent culture war. You reap what you sow.”
Thomas explained that while she is an advocate for free speech, “what I do find indefensible is the fact that Canadians tax dollars were used in order to propagate this type of material.”
“Do you believe that that’s wrong as well?” she asked Guilbeault.
“Honestly, I’ve checked with the Deputy Heritage minister,” he responded. “We have not been made aware of this. I can undertake to quickly look into this with the department and see what in fact was printed in this newspaper and we’ll come back to you.”
Thomas further pressed Guilbeault on the Liberal government’s funding of the Canadian Anti-Hate Network (CAHN), which recently commissioned an investigative journalist to track Catholic and pro-life organizations.
“It spurs further polarization,” she explained, adding that Guilbeault has previously called on Canadians to “unite and come together.”
“So when an organization is taking almost $1 million from your government and using it to this end, do you believe that they should continue to be funded?” Thomas challenged.
Again, Guilbeault repeated his promise to investigate the situation but failed to offer a concrete solution. Thomas pressed if he would remove the taxpayer funding from the organization for the targeting of Catholics and pro-lifers
Guilbeault vaguely responded that the government would look into the case and determine if funding should be withdrawn.
In an interview with LifeSiteNews, Campaign Life Coalition’s (CLC) Jack Fonseca commended Thomas for standing up for marginalized Canadians
“MP Thomas was awesome, and we thank her from the bottom of our hearts, and encourage her to keep up the great work!” he declared. “It’s about time Conservative politicians finally started exposing these far-left, Liberal Party front groups that receive vast amounts of public funds in order to spew hatred and vilification against Christians and conservatives.”
Fonseca revealed that CLC has been “personally targeted” by CAHN as recently as March when the group attempted to cancel a pro-life youth summit.
“Campaign Life Coalition has seen firsthand how they use misinformation to smear and silence Christians and those who hold traditional values,” he revealed.
“In the past three years alone, CAHN published false claims about Campaign Life Coalition, which we challenged through legal channels – resulting in a retraction by the group,” Fonseca added.
“It is extremely concerning that an organization engaging in such hateful and discriminatory tactics is receiving taxpayer funding,” he warned.
“Furthermore, CAHN is associated with Antifa, the violent domestic terror group which the Trump administration is now working to dismantle after a wave of deadly shootings and coordinated, militarized assaults against law enforcement officers in the U.S.,” Fonseca shared.
“Why are Canadian taxpayers sending money to a group that is associated with a violent, domestic terror network?” he questioned. “MP Thomas’ efforts to shine a light on this disgraceful abuse of taxpayer dollars is greatly appreciated.”
